Wedding Beauty & Grooming Product Reviews

There’s nothing more soothing than a good hot, aromatic soak – but finding those magical droplets of oil that flood your senses with heaven-sent scent is a little trickier and could prove expensive. So we’ve done the hard work for you, and tried out a range of affordable and higher-end bath oils to point you in the right direction. (You’re welcome). We’ve also tested hairsprays and a face mask, too (because we’re good like that).

Face Masks

Body Shop British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask

Product: The Body Shop British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask

Packaging: 3 out of 5
Aroma: British rose
Promises: to moisturise, soothe and tone the skin after a 10-minute application
Review rating: 4 out of 5
Review: intense in its aroma and slippery and gel-like in texture, I wasn’t initially convinced by this product. It was easy (though slightly jelly-like) to apply and remove, absorbed quickly into my skin and although it left my skin feeling revived and hydrated, I felt the results maybe even more rewarding it I’d left the mask on for a little longer. Maybe next time.

Hairspray

Product: TIGI Bed Head Superstar

Packaging rating: 3
Aroma: orange
Promises: extremely voluminous hair
Review rating: 4
Review: super easy to use, just a few drops of this product applied by the palms of your hands to wet hair is enough to give you an impressive level of volume. Style and blow dry, and voila – enviable tresses full of lift! And a refreshing citrusy-orange scent to boot. Gives long-lasting volume to thick hair without making it look heavy or less soft, but can look at little greasy at the roots of fine hair.

Bumble & bumble Surf Spray (50ml)

Product: Bumble & bumble Surf Spray

Packaging: 3 out of 5
Aroma: saltwater
Promises: to adds texture and give volume, create beach waves
Review rating: 3 out of 5
Review: this hairspray has a saltwater scent that really recreates the just-off-the-beach aroma. It’s effective too: apply it to wet hair and – with careful styling and drying – you can create that Summer Bay beach hair look. However, it stiffens hair to give it hold, thereby losing the overall ‘natural’ appeal.

Beard Grooming Products

Murdock Beard Shampoo (250ml)

Product: Murdock Beard Shampoo

Packaging: 5 out of 5 – really smart clear bottle with chrome lid and white, blue and red packaging. And it feels nice, too, thanks to the silkily-textured label!
Aroma: one of the nicest we’ve come across – mossy, masculine, elegant.
Promises: to provide effective cleansing of pollutants with a gentle, pH-balanced formula.
Review rating: 5 out of 5.
Review: Easily one of the best products of this type we’ve tested, everything from the packaging and fragrance to ease of use and results impressed us. Lathers well, rinses out easily and leaves the beard feeling both clean and nourished. We’re keeping this in our shower permanently!

BRISK Beard Shampoo (150ml)

Product: BRISK Beard Shampoo

Packaging: 3 out of 5 – plain and functional in its brown bottle.
Aroma: unfragranced, but with a natural slightly nutty aroma.
Promises: to cleanse your beard whilst leaving it nourished and conditioned to keep it looking healthy.
Review rating: 3 out of 5.
Review: In keeping with the brand-name – Brisk – this feels like a product which is intended to get the job done efficiently rather than being exciting to use; it’s functional, which to be fair for many people will be a strong selling point, rather than fun.

Galvin & Gray Bleu Noir Beard Oil (30ml)

Product: Galvin & Gray Bleu Noir Beard Oil

Packaging: 3 out of 5 – its brown bottle and black lid with pipette makes it look like aromatherapy oil or ear drops, which we don’t think gives it much ‘shelf-presence’!
Aroma: really liked this – the sandalwood scent is luxurious and soothing.
Promises: none made.
Review rating: 4 out of 5.
Review: A really lovely product to use, this is a thick, rich oil which really moisturises both the beard and the skin beneath. One downside to the richness is that it sticks to the hands and we needed to really wash our hands thoroughly after every use to get it off, but the extra effort was worth it for the results.

BRISK Beard Oil (50ml)

Product: BRISK Beard Oil

Packaging: 4 out of 5 – a bit plain but we liked the dapper bear on the box!
Aroma: pleasantly herbal.
Promises: to coat, soften and tame the grizzliest of beards.
Review rating: 4 out of 5.
Review: Easy to dispense from the generously-sized pipette, this pleasant-smelling oil was easy to apply, quickly absorbed and mess-free. The aroma faded quickly but left my beard with a subtle sheen which lasted all day.

BRISK Beard Balm (40g)

Product: BRISK Beard Balm

Packaging: 3 out of 5 – a utilitarian tin.
Aroma: pleasant, but a little too medical/shoe-polishy for our liking.
Promises: to soften and care for all beard types…use to style the beard and keep in shape.
Review rating: 3 out of 5.
Review: This balm is very thick and even when warmed between the hands, we found it clumped slightly on application leaving bits in the beard which needed removing. It isn’t really suited to shorter beards; being so thick it gets lost on shorter hair and the time taken to apply outweighs the benefit. Probably much better suited to guys who have a longer beard which they have time to spend styling, rather than the busy beardy on-the-go.

Bed Head for Men Lion Tamer (100ml)

Product: TIGI Bed Head for Men Lion Tamer Beard & Hair Balm

Packaging: 4 out of 5 – an attractive chrome tube and brown label – but instructions are tiny and almost impossible to read!
Aroma: delightful, fresh like a cologne – like Eternity by Calvin Klein.

Review rating: 3 out of 5.
Review: This is a really pleasant product to use and is quickly absorbed without leaving any residue on the face or hands, so quick and easy to use every day. We didn’t notice any lasting benefits but it’s a feel-good product and one that could happily form part of our daily regime.

Shaving

TIGI Bed Head Smooth Mover Rich Shave Cream (150ml)

Product: TIGI Bed Head For Men Smooth Mover Rich Shave Cream

Packaging: 4 out of 5 – an attractive chrome tube with brown label – but instructions are tiny and almost impossible to read!
Aroma: delightful, fresh like a cologne – like Eternity by Calvin Klein.
Promises: none, although the name suggests it will deliver a smooth shave.
Review rating: 5 out of 5.
Review: Unlike many shave creams we’ve tried which don’t cling to the beard area when applied by hand, this one distributed excellently and evenly and stayed in place throughout our shave – brilliant! This combined with the great fragrance and long-lasting nature of the product (from the tiny amount needed, we reckon we’d get about 40-50 shaves out of this 150ml tube) make this a star buy for us.

The Bluebeards-Revenge-Luxury-Shaving-Cream (100ml)

Product: The Bluebeards Revenge Shaving Cream

Packaging: 2 out of 5 – aesthetically it looks nice in its blue box with foil skull & crossbones. And we salute them for featuring info on the Orchid Campaign promoting awareness of male cancer on the inside of the box. But we were actively offended by the flap saying ‘Buy Your Own!’ referring to ‘the woman in your life’. Not all men are straight. Not all women are either. It’s outdated, misogynistic and if not actually homophobic, at least deeply ignorant – gay men shave too! And enough with this ‘Real Men recycle’ nonsense.
Aroma: Very nice indeed – an unusual, light, mineral-like scent. One of the nicest frgrances we’ve encountered actually!
Promises: to reduce the appearance of beard growth while moisturising and protecting the skin.
Review rating: 5 out of 5 (but not for the packaging)
Review: If you can forget about the packaging, this is a very good product indeed. Ot does what it promises, has a great fragrance, and goes on (and stays on) easily especially when applied with the accompanying brush, giving a close, smooth, comfortable shave and nicely soft skin afterwards.

The Bluebeards-Revenge-Post Shave Balm (100ml)

Product: The Bluebeards Revenge Post Shave Balm

Packaging: 3 out of 5 – aesthetically appealing in its blue box with foil skull & crossbones. And we salute them for featuring info on the Orchid Campaign promoting awareness of male cancers on the inside of the box. But there’s just no need for the sexualised image of a woman in a stop sign saying ‘Buy Your Own!’ or the silly references to ‘real men’ which perpetuate outdated stereotypes.
Aroma: Fantastic, really clean and botanical – the advertised witch hazel really comes through.
Promises: a clean fresh finish…lessens the effects of irritation and alleviates the skin of any dryness.
Review rating: 4 out of 5
Review: Once we’d got over the very strange texture and appearance – this looks like wallpaper paste and feels like hair gel – this was a very nice product to use: easy to apply, providing long-lasting moisturisation as promised, and we really like the botanical fragrance.
